Extension and RenovationAbout this home

We were thrilled to take on the extension project in East Fremantle, brought to us by Studio M1. Our clients, a young couple planning for their future family, had a clear vision for their home. They wanted to extend their cosy 50’s cottage to include a new kitchen, dining area, living space, and a master bedroom to the rear of the yard.

The end result was a stunning home that seamlessly blends modern amenities with classic charm. Using a close matching timber weatherboard for the external cladding made the extension feel a part of the existing house compared to an obvious extension. It also blended in with the coastal surfy feel brought into the landscaping with limestone retaining, and recycled rusty galvanised corrugation for some feature fencing.

The existing rear of the house was removed and extended from the laundry. A polished concrete slab shows where the extension begins and provides a contrast the original jarrah flooring of the existing house. Exposed brick and wooden beams blend the traditional with fresher more modern feel, while also adding texture and warmth

We were able to save and re-use the existing originally concrete laundry trough. By building a new frame and home for it we were able to play homage to some of the original characteristics.
